NAD’s new 399 is an interesting integrated amplifier, whether or not you add the BluOS-D expansion module. It’s exciting because, while it leads NAD’s Classic Series in design and naming, it also has features from the higher-end Master Series. It includes Ncore Amplifier technology and the same high-quality 32-bit/384kHz ESS Sabre DAC chip found in the Masters M10 and M33.
This design aims to produce sound with low noise, low distortion, clean clipping, and stable, high-power performance with a difficult speaker load.
And that was just the beginning of what makes this product so interesting. The C 399 is the first amplifier to feature NAD’s new second-generation Modular Design Construction (MDC2). You can buy it with or without the MDC2 BluOS-D module. The base model cost is ($1999), and with the module installed, cost is ($2549).
The MDC2 BluOS-D module adds a lot of features to the already impressive C 399. It offers WiFi and Ethernet connectivity, advanced bass management, MQA decoding and rendering, Spotify Connect, Apple Airway 2 support, and Tidel Connect. It also combines the C399 into Len-brook’s BluOS streaming ecosystem, which is like the famous version of Sonos. The main point is the module adds Dirac Live room-correction capabilities.
Even without the MDC2 BluOS-D module, the C 399 is still packed with features. It has dual coaxial and optical digital inputs, dual stereo line-level inputs (RCA), a phono input (MM), an HDMI ARC port (PCM audio only), and dual subwoofer outputs (with a fixed 80Hz crossover unless you have the BluOS-D installed). Design and Build Quality
NAD’s C399 is a simple design that fits in any audio setup easily. It is strongly built, including a solid chassis, boosts performance, and minimizes vibrations. The front panel combines physical buttons with high resolution to easily access all important information.
Setup
First of all, I auditioned the C399 as a review sample with the BluOS-D module which is already installed. The setup was quick, however, most users probably have a few extra setups. The manual of C399 can be found on the NAD’s website. The BluOS-D mostly comes with two antennas ( one for WiFi and one for Bluetooth), one USB adapter, one Live Dirac microphone, and a long cord.
Then I connected C399 with bookshelf speakers powered by Audio Saxo 5 and a JL Audio Dominion d-110 subwoofer using the C 399’s single-ended RCA pre-outs and one of its subwoofer output. Then I connected this with the Polk audio pair to test the internal amplifier.
Basically, I used the BluOS app to stream music like Qobuz, Tidal, USB thumb drives, and Internet radio. To test the ARC features of C399, I connected its HDMI eARC port to an LG OLED TV. Since my TV does not support eARC, so I used an old HDMI ARC, which is compatible with eARC.
After setup everything up, I connected the Dirac live microphone with a BluOS USB port. I also download Dirac live software into the desktop C drive of my PC. The software identifies C399 on my network and then guides me in making and storing room measurements. However the correction filter is adjustable, so I use the default filter profile, as I suppose most users will, I also chose the “tight” seating focus. Audiophile’s Premium Sound Amplifier
Then I tested the C399 in my bedroom, which has some acoustical issues and an irregular shape. I preferred the sound with Dirac Live, as it improved the sound clarity, bass control, and imaging, making the sound slightly cooler and thinner. I think I can’t use Dirac Live in a room with better acoustics.
The C399 physical build is basic but enough. The column control knob on the front wall can’t seem as solid as other competing products, but it works well and have enough steps. SR9 remote control is functional but feels plasticky and has many color buttons, that match the remote of a TV cable box and budget A/V receivers.
These minor flaws can’t upset many users, Especially when most function of C 399 is controlled by the BluOS app, which is highly praised.
Performance
NAD C399 represents high performance and can’t make any compromise on sound quality. However, streaming from the internet or other local resources. NAD C399 delivers a high and clear sound for its price. Audiophile’s Premium Sound Amplifier
The C399 also provides a good performance with “Moanin'” by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers (16/44.1 FLAC). The notes of the piano were clear, the tuner sounded rich, and the trumpet was bright and sharp. The double bass rhythm was ideal for Tack’s lively feel.
I can’t test the C399 phono stage but have tested its headphone output. According to the details and clarity, it doesn’t match the high-end audio amp. However, it drives many headphones well. It is better than other competitors and enough for good casual listening.
To test eARC features, I watched Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The C 399 reproduced the sound of coins, chains, and explosions with great clarity and power.
I have tested the C 399, with line-level and speaker-level. Some details are unclear with system audio speakers, like Adele’s voice and Piano in “Monain”. These changes are minor but noticeable. Audiophile’s Premium Sound Amplifier
C399 may not be the best-looking and solidly built but its sound quality was ideal. As compared to other DACs like the Simaudio Moon 280D ($3,000) and HiFi Rose 150B ($4,995), the C399 offers a great sound profile. C399 has some advantages in overall sound quality and frequencies.
